For over 20 years, the annual Cowboys & Candlelight event has brought alumni, donors, and the surrounding community together to build the Dickinson State University Rodeo Team. In the past, Cowboys & Candlelight hosted attendees on the DSU campus, at the Biesiot Activities Center, and at local venues. This year, the fundraising event will coincide with the grand opening celebration of the Dale Little Soldier Arena, a standout detail that has the DSU Heritage Foundation (DSU HF) staff buzzing with anticipation. “No other fundraising event on campus happens on the competition floor,” noted Kyle Smith, DSU HF Athletics & Rodeo Development Officer.
This fundraiser has experimented with several ways to engage donors and the community while showcasing the Rodeo Team’s achievements, including recent inductions into the Blue Hawk Hall of Fame. In this year’s twist on past Cowboys & Candlelight evenings, DSU will welcome keynote speaker Bear Pascoe, a former Super Bowl Champion and NFR finalist with a passion for athlete development. Pascoe will help DSU welcome and motivate the incoming Class of 2026 rodeo recruits. “This year the DSU HF has become more involved [in the event] to provide additional support for the Rodeo Team coaches and athletes,” said Smith. That effort will surely shine brightly for attendees on March 7th.
