John Hanstad grew up in Dickinson and graduated from Dickinson High School in 2008 before earning a degree in biology from Dickinson State University (DSU) in 2013. He chose DSU not only for its programs but also to stay close to home. Playing basketball for the Blue Hawks was an added bonus to his college experience.
After DSU, Hanstad attended the Arizona College of Optometry. He then returned home to work with his father-in-law, Dr. Mark Emmerich, and in 2020, he established Badlands Eye Clinic in Dickinson.

Reflecting on his career path, he said, “being able to help people every day is what I always wanted to do. Getting to know my patients over the years and staying connected to my local community is something that I value.” Experiences like those he had at DSU showed him the importance of making connections and how rewarding those relationships can be.
Hanstad and his wife, Mallory, a 2011 DSU nursing graduate, have three children: Thomas, Quinny, and Andrew. He is most proud of his faith and family. He also cherishes the opportunity to work and raise his family in his hometown, a community that fosters real connections.
He encourages students to take full advantage of their time at DSU, explaining that it is a place where they can not only learn about life, but also gain the necessary tools to navigate it. “DSU is a special place where you can do anything,” he said.
