For the first time, the annual Cowboys & Candlelight event for Dickinson State University’s Rodeo Team was held on the competition floor at the brand-new Dale Little Soldier Arena. The event and grand opening of the arena drew the largest crowd in recent years at 420 attendees. “Thanks to the hard work on Winn Construction, specifically Tony Sisson, the dirt in the arena held up phenomenally,” said Kyle Smith, DSU Heritage Foundation Athletics & Rodeo Development Officer.
“The grand opening and Cowboys & Candlelight celebration was a great night,” DSU Head Rodeo Coach Joe Schmidt reflected. “To see this community show up and support our students, program and to recognize Dale and Susie was very special. Thank you to everyone who played a part in the planning and preparation for the event, the entire team at the DSU Heritage Foundation did an amazing job.”

Guests enjoyed a full evening of recruit signings, a social hour, dinner, and auction, with Sodexo’s team delivering a standout meal. DSU HF Graduate Assistant Chloe Gunderson kept the event on track and the energy high in the arena, and the hard work certainly paid off, as the event raised over $60,000, providing a strong start to the spring rodeo season.
Smith echoed Coach Schmidt’s gratitude for the night’s success. “It was such a special night recognizing the commitment Dale and Susie Little Solider have made to DSU. Seeing the joy and approval on their faces all night made the evening perfect.”
